I am pretty much self-taught in photography, as with most other things in my life. For most of my adult life though, a camera and darkroom have been present, running in the background. A few years ago, as I began to burn out on the practice of medicine I turned more frequently to photography as an escape and a chance to exercise the creative portion of my brain. I also turned from being primarily a landscape photographer to a photographer of the human form. I suppose this transition made sense since many years as a radiologist made me a student as well as observer of the human form. As my dissatisfaction with medicine progressed it became harder to leave the studio and travel to the hospital. Finally, I gave up the hospital and stayed in the studio. Somewhere along this path I discovered dance and ballet in particular. Dance is where the combination of human form and function reach their zenith. There is little that gives me more satisfaction than a photo shoot with a well-trained dancer. These are creative, athletic individuals with an incredible work ethic. I have also found them to be, thus far without exception, fun people to be with. Hopefully the dance photographs shown in the gallery demonstrate some of their strength, energy, creativity and humor. Anything less is purely my shortcoming, not theirs. Bob DeWeese |
